Vietnam — Day 2: Old Quarter Walks, Café Culture & Hanoi After Dark
(Vietnam itinerary Curated by Sam Bhandari – TripsWithSam )
Begin your morning with breakfast at your hotel, allowing yourself a slow start before stepping into Hanoi’s historic heart. From most central hotels, the Old Quarter is best explored entirely on foot — streets are narrow, distances are short, and the details reveal themselves only when you walk.
Start with a self-guided walking loop through the Old Quarter, moving at your own pace. Each street carries its own identity — silk, silver, spices, paper — a legacy of Hanoi’s ancient guild system. Pause often, observe daily life, and let the city unfold naturally rather than rushing from landmark to landmark.
Mid-morning is reserved for Hanoi’s café culture. Walk to Café Giảng , home of the famous egg coffee. The café is modest, tucked away in an alley, but its rich, velvety coffee has become an icon. Alternatively, The Note Coffee offers a quieter, atmospheric stop just minutes away — both are easily reachable by foot.
Late morning brings a touch of tradition with a cyclo ride through the Old Quarter. This relaxed, seated experience allows you to absorb the city’s rhythm without navigating the crowds yourself. Cyclo rides typically begin near Hoan Kiem Lake and last around 30 minutes, offering a charming, old-world perspective of Hanoi.
For lunch, take a short taxi ride (5–10 minutes) to Essence Restaurant , where modern Vietnamese cuisine is presented with refinement. The calm interior and thoughtful menu provide a welcome pause from the busy streets.
The afternoon is dedicated to culture and reflection. Travel by taxi to the Temple of Literature, Vietnam’s first university and a peaceful escape from the city’s energy. From there, continue to the Vietnam Fine Arts Museum, located nearby and easily combined into one smooth cultural route.
Return to your hotel in the late afternoon to rest. Hanoi evenings are best enjoyed refreshed.
As night falls, head by Grab taxi (10–15 minutes) to The Summit Lounge at Pan Pacific Hanoi . From here, West Lake and the city skyline stretch out beneath you, especially striking after sunset.
Dinner follows at El Gaucho Hanoi , offering premium steaks and fine wines in an elegant setting — a comfortable balance after a day of walking and exploration.
The evening concludes with a taxi ride back to your hotel, allowing you to unwind and prepare for tomorrow’s journey beyond the city.
Travel Tip:
Wear comfortable walking shoes today — Hanoi’s pavements can be uneven. Keep small cash for cafés and cyclo rides, but use cards at restaurants and hotels.
