Tips/Notes Curated By Sam Bhandari

Traveling solo is a strange, wonderful thing. It’s exciting, liberating, and sometimes a little terrifying. Over the years, I’ve found that the best lessons come from the moments when everything doesn’t go according to plan — when I get lost, miss a train, or wander into the streets I never intended to explore.

Here are a few lessons I’ve learned from getting lost on my solo journeys:

1. Losing Your Way Can Be a Gift

When you step off the beaten path, you stumble upon hidden cafés, quiet streets, or vibrant local markets you would never have found otherwise. Getting lost forces you to slow down and notice details you might otherwise rush past.

2. Trust Your Instincts

Solo travel teaches you to rely on yourself. When you’re lost, every decision is yours — which way to turn, whom to ask for directions, how to read the map. You learn to trust your instincts and take ownership of your journey.

3. Connection is Everywhere

Even in unfamiliar cities, people are often more generous and helpful than you expect. Strangers offer directions, tips, and sometimes even an invitation to join them for coffee or a meal. These moments remind me that travel is as much about human connection as it is about sights.

4. Patience is a Superpower

Getting lost tests your patience, but it also teaches you resilience. Waiting for the right bus, navigating winding alleys, or figuring out a confusing metro system becomes part of the adventure, and you start to embrace the uncertainty.

5. Stories Come From the Unplanned

Some of my favorite memories are the ones I didn’t plan. The alley I stumbled into that led to a street performance, the small restaurant tucked away behind a mural, or a quiet sunrise view on a hill I wasn’t supposed to climb. These “accidents” make travel unforgettable.

6. You Learn Who You Are

Traveling solo forces introspection. When everything goes wrong — missed connections, lost luggage, language barriers — you discover your strengths, your patience, and your ability to adapt. Every detour is a little mirror reflecting who you are when nothing is familiar.

Final Thought:

Getting lost isn’t a setback; it’s part of the journey. It’s where stories begin, lessons are learned, and the most authentic experiences happen. Solo travel is not about perfection — it’s about embracing the unknown, trusting yourself, and finding joy in the unexpected.
