Rome is one of those cities where where you stay can completely change your experience.
You can wake up beside ancient ruins, spend the afternoon wandering beautiful neighbourhood streets, stop for an espresso at a tiny café, and finish the evening over pasta and wine in a lively piazza.
But Rome is big, and every neighbourhood has a different personality.
So, where should you stay?

🏛️ 1. Centro Storico — Best for First-Time Visitors
If this is your first trip to Rome, Centro Storico is hard to beat.
This is the heart of historic Rome, with many of the city’s most famous sights within walking distance.
You’ll be close to:
- Pantheon
- Piazza Navona
- Trevi Fountain
- Campo de’ Fiori
- Spanish Steps
The biggest advantage is simple: you can walk almost everywhere.
Eat & Drink
Look for traditional trattorias tucked away from the busiest tourist streets. Campo de’ Fiori is great for an evening stroll, while the smaller streets around Piazza Navona are perfect for aperitivo.
Best for: First-time visitors, sightseeing, couples and short stays.

🍷 2. Trastevere — Best for Food & Evening Atmosphere
Cross the river and you’ll find Trastevere, one of Rome’s most atmospheric neighbourhoods.
Think cobblestone streets, colourful buildings, little piazzas, wine bars and restaurants that stay lively late into the evening.
It’s particularly beautiful around sunset.
Eat & Drink
This is an excellent neighbourhood for a relaxed Roman dinner.
Look for:
- Cacio e pepe
- Carbonara
- Amatriciana
- Roman-style pizza
- Gelato
- Aperitivo
Don’t be afraid to wander away from the main squares. Some of the best discoveries happen on the quieter side streets.
Best for: Food lovers, couples, nightlife and travellers who enjoy atmosphere.

🌿 3. Monti — Best for a Stylish, Local Feel
Just a short walk from the Colosseum, Monti feels completely different from the major tourist areas.
It’s one of my favourite choices for travellers who want Rome’s history but also enjoy independent boutiques, cafés, wine bars and a more creative atmosphere.
Spend the morning exploring the neighbourhood, visit the Colosseum, then return to Monti for dinner.
The vibe
Think slow mornings, good coffee, vintage shops and wine in a small piazza.
Best for: Couples, creatives, design lovers and repeat visitors.

🍝 4. Testaccio — Best for Authentic Roman Food
If food is one of the main reasons you’re visiting Rome, put Testaccio on your list.
This neighbourhood has a strong connection to traditional Roman cuisine and feels considerably more local than the areas surrounding the major monuments.
It’s the kind of place where you can spend an afternoon simply eating, drinking and exploring without following a sightseeing checklist.
What to try
Make room for the classics:
Carbonara. Cacio e pepe. Amatriciana.
And if you’re feeling adventurous, explore some of the traditional Roman dishes that go beyond the usual tourist menu.
Best for: Serious foodies, local experiences and returning visitors.

⛪ 5. Prati — Best for a Quieter Stay
Located close to Vatican City, Prati is elegant, spacious and more residential.
It’s a good alternative if you want easy access to the Vatican but don’t want to stay directly in the busiest historic centre.
You’ll find attractive streets, restaurants, cafés and plenty of everyday Roman life.
Best for: Families, longer stays, quieter evenings and Vatican visitors.

🥂 6. Parioli — Best for an Upscale Experience
For a more sophisticated and residential side of Rome, consider Parioli.
It’s leafy, elegant and noticeably quieter than Centro Storico or Trastevere.
This is a neighbourhood for travellers who prefer beautiful surroundings, quality restaurants and a slower pace over being right beside every major attraction.
Best for: Luxury travellers, couples and longer stays.
